The movie Issız Adam, directed by Çağan Irmak and released in 2008, has been the subject of many discussions since the day it was released. The film is about the conflict between the modern world and traditionalism, also deals with being alone in crowds and human relations from different perspectives. Now lets take a look at the film from the perspective of psychology, the plot and the inner worlds of Alper and Ada, the main characters of the film.
''I know darling. There is no one, there will be no one. other people's children, their lives,
When we read the above quote and look at the film superficially, at first glance. We might think it's a complicated love story. But the film is much more than that. Before analyzing the movie and the characters, let's briefly talk about the plot. Alper is a successful chef who has his own restaurant. He is very fond of records. Already with Ada It was thanks to this fondness that he met him. Alper prefers a regular and long relationship. He is someone who prefers one-night stands and has sadistic pleasures in these relationships. Ada has her own costume shop, is modest, calm and full of experiences. She is a woman who really cares. They met at a second-hand second-hand bookstore where Alper went to buy records and Ada to buy second-hand books. First Alper, who liked Ada at sight, tried various ways to impress Ada for a while. While Ada tries to protect herself from men due to her past experiences, Alper's With his interest, the two soon started a relationship. As I mentioned above, Alper While Ada is a flirtatious man who stays away from commitment to someone, he struggles with finding and finding the right person. He wants to have a long relationship. Despite these opposing desires, the relationship between the two is very good. While they were leaving, with the arrival of Alper's mother, the rosy cloud over their relationship began to rise. It has been replaced by a dark cloud. The arrival of Alper's mother was the most important breaking point of the film. Alper with his family in the countryside While he was an individual living in a low socioeconomic level, he opened his own restaurant in the city and rose to the top. passed to the socioeconomic level. His communication with his family is quite poor. her mother's city Alper's reactions to the ease of his life, his clothes and conversations It is very far from modern life. Despite this, Alper likes to be alone and listens his nostalgic songs at home. As far as we understand from here, Alper stucked between a traditional and modern life. Ada is a person who cares about experiences and the past. but he is also someone who has easily adapted to modern life in the city. Alper is unhappy cause of his mother because her reminds him of his past life. for the Ada there is no problem, in fact, it is a pleasure to spend time with Ms. Müzeyyen. Ms. Müzeyyen states that Ada is the person who will make her son happy and He constantly warns Alper not to lose Ada. In his conversation with Ada, when she talks with Ada about Alper'' He was an introverted person who did not show his love since he was little. '' Ada is aware of Alper's introvert and fear of relationships. She always proceeds slowly and carefully in his relationships in order not to scare Alper. In fact, so much so that she was afraid to say that she loved Alper so as not to scare him, and could only say it when Alper was drunk. With the departure of Ms.Müzeyyen, Alper also left Ada.He removed himself from his life and enjoyed returning to his initial loneliness. However, as time passed, he regretted it and tried to reach Ada, but he cant succeed In the last scene of the movie, two ex-lovers who meet after many years meet each other. They both wore masks of happiness when they had so much to say.
In this context .When we look at the last scene of the movie, the question that came to everyone's mind was 'Would anything change if Ada tried to change Alper?' Before answering this question, I would like to comment on Alper's avoidant attitude in relationships. Alper preferred one-night stands and stayed away from long relationships. He didn't want anyone to enter his world and he didn't want to be a part of anyone else's world. He didn't like being in crowded places. Also, his mother told that heis someone who has an introverted nature and avoids showing someone he loves. In the light of this information, attachment theory in psychology comes to our mind.
Avoidant attachment: The word attachment refers to the relationship established between the caregiver and the individual in the early years of life. This relationship established in the early years is also can be reflected in the relationships that the individual will establish in his adulthood. Although attachment is divided into 4 different types, in this article we will only discuss the avoidant attachment type. Avoidantly attached individuals have difficulty establishing emotional closeness with others. These people have complex feelings and thoughts about close relationships. While they desire emotional closeness, on the other hand, this closeness scares them. They have negative beliefs about their partners and themselves. They often do not see themselves as worthy of being valued and do not trust their partners. They expect less emotional closeness from their partners and often prefer to suppress and hide their emotions. Although we do not have clear information about what he experienced with his parents when he was a child, what his mother told us and Alper's behavior make us think that he had an avoidant attachment style.
To summarize in general and answer the question we asked above, Alper carried what he experienced and felt in the very early and later years of his life in his pocket throughout his adulthood, and this was reflected in the social relationships he established. While he wanted to find a place for himself in the modern world, his love was somewhere within him. Afraid of relationships and the confusion of his world, Alper found the solution by removing Ada from his life. At the end of the movie, Alper saw that this was not a solution, but he finially undertands the value of love and relationship, but it was too late. He was now a lonely man. He was alone in his inner world. His Ada was gone. He was living with the regret of what didn't happen.
